Outstanding Collections from the County Town of Kent This exceptionally fine regional museum housed in Chillington Manor, a delightful Elizabethan manor house, boasts a rich and impressive variety of historical objects, fine art and natural history. Fine and decorative arts include European and British paintings, ceramics, glass, furniture. An extensive archaeological collection contrasts artefacts from the Prehistoric, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Medieval periods, and an Egyptian collection including our own Mummy. The Japanese collection of Edo period ceramics, lacquer, metalwork and prints is one of the finest outside London. The museum's Ethnography Gallery houses the collections of Maidstone's 19th Century explorer and benefactor - Julius Brenchley. The Natural History Galleries, Costume Gallery and Local & Social History Gallery are currently under refurbishment and will be opening in May 2000. Maidstone Museum and Bentlif Art Gallery is a lasting memorial to the activity, enthusiasms and generosity of Maidstone's benefactors and will reward today's visitor with a fascinating, entertaining and informative day out.
