The Historic Dockyard, Chatham is one of the world's most important maritime heritage locations. The 80-acre site contains 47 scheduled ancient monuments and is home to a wide range of exciting naval and maritime exhibits. Three powerful fighting ships are permanently dry-docked in the 'yard; H.M.S. Cavalier, Britain's last remaining W.W.II destroyer, the spy submarine Ocelot and the last Victorian sloop, Gannet. Guided tours around the destroyer and submarine are included in the price revealing what life was like for those on board. The Wooden Walls gallery allows visitors to walk through the Royal Dockyard of 1758 and discover how Britain's wooden warships were built. The RNLI National Exhibition Hall, Lifeboat!, tells the heroic story of the RNLI with an exciting display of 15 full size lifeboats, film and artefacts. In the ¼ mile long Ropery craftsmen still use traditional techniques to make the rope that rigs the world's grandest sailing ships. The Museum of the Royal Dockyard celebrates Chatham's heroic naval past, covering 400 years of history from the Armada through to the Falklands. Opening times April - October; daily 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. February, March and November; open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. The site is closed during December and January.
