Tunbridge Wells Local Sights : IGHTHAM MOTE |

IGHTHAM MOTE IVY HATCH, Near SEVENOAKS Tel: (01732) 811145
Ightham Mote is one of the oldest and loveliest of medieval manor houses to survive in England, offering visitors the chance to explore 650 years of history. Hidden at the foot of the Greensand Ridge in the Kentish Weald, the house would have been almost unapproachable in winter before the lane surfaces were hardened. Cromwell's soldiers, intent on looting it, lost their way and ransacked another house instead! On arrival at the property there is a fascinating exhibition which explains the restoration of the house - the largest project of its kind that the National Trust has ever undertaken. Wander down the pathway and cross the moat, entering a medieval and Tudor house with rooms dating from as early as the 1340's. As you enter the courtyard you will be enclosed by the wings of the house and feel the atmosphere - this would have been the scene of much arrival and departure over the centuries with constant criss-crossing by family and servants on their way from one staircase to another. It is the best place from which to trace the story of the house, since all its periods are represented here. Open: House: 1 April to 4 Nov: daily except Tues & Sat. Time: 11-5.30; last admission 4.30. |
