Gad's Hill Place Home of Charles Dickens Higham-by-Rochester Kent ME3 7PA His 'Little Kentish Freehold' Charles Dickens and his family lived here from 1857 to 1870. An 18th Century house with alterations by Dickens to accommodate his family's needs. His last addition, the conservatory, was restored to its former glory in 1995. In this house, he wrote a number of his novels. He died here whilst working on his uncompleted book 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood'. Gad's Hill is now a school, standing in pleasant grounds with lovely views. You can visit part of the house, stroll in the grounds and appreciate Dickens's love for his country home in the Garden of England. Open FIRST SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH EASTER UNTIL OCTOBER and Bank Holiday Sundays 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Open 11 a.m. - 4.30 p.m. during the Rochester Summer and Christmas Dickens Festivals. £2.50 includes guided tour. Cream teas and other refreshments available. Tours, weddings and parties may be booked by prior arrangement.
