CHARTWELL Near WESTERHAM

Tel: (01732) 866368

The delightful home of Sir Winston Churchill from 1924 until the end of his life. Visit and see why Sir Winston said "a day away from Chartwell is a day wasted". Visitors today can enjoy the special charm of the house, its beautiful setting, lovely gardens and extensive parkland estate. As well as exploring the house, enjoy the gardens with the lake, swimming pool and Water Garden that Sir Winston created. There is a tiny summerhouse which he built for his daughter Mary, called the "Marycot" and the pools where he would feed the fat golden orfe. Wander along the Golden Rose Walk created by Lady Clementine and see the garden walls that Churchill built with his own hands. Chartwell was a much-loved family home and is still a place for families to explore and enjoy. There is lots of space to let off steam, a cat called Jock, goldfish, guide books for children and grown-ups, wonderful walks, a super gift shop and a restaurant. Walkers can strike out across the Estate, and follow the Weardale Walk, a circular walk linking Chartwell with nearby Emmetts Garden. Open: House, garden & studio: 31 March to 1 July: 1 Sept to 4 Nov: daily except Mon & Tues (but open BH Mon & Tues in July & August). Times: 11-5; last admission 4.15.
