Romantic, double moated castle, once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, second wife to Henry VIII. It was later given to Anne of Cleves - Henry VIII's fourth wife as part of her divorce settlement. In 1903, William Waldorf Astor acquired the estate and spent much time, money and imagination in restoring it to what you see today. Tudor artefacts as well as portraits of the Boleyn family, Henry VIII and other Tudor nobility can be seen in the castle. The 'From Castles to Country Houses' miniature model houses collection is 1/12th scale houses depicting life from Domesday to Victorian times. The award winning gardens include 35 acre lake, a Rose Garden, Tudor Garden and a yew maze. The Italian Garden was built to house WW Astor's collection of Italian statues. More recently , a unique ' splashing' water maze has been added and a 110 metre herbaceous border reinstated by the present owners. Hever Castle and Gardens is located in West Kent, 30 minutes from Gatwick, 1 ½ hours from Dover or 30 miles south east of London. It is open daily from 1 March until 30 November. |
