Howletts, near Canterbury houses many rare animals including the biggest captive breeding group of lowland gorillas in the world with well over 60 births to date. Other animals include a breeding herd of African elephants plus Siberian and Indian tigers and many species of monkeys and cats. Facilities include a self-service restaurant and gift shop. Port Lympne, near Hythe, overlooks historic Romney Marsh. Within its 350 acres one can find gorillas, Indian elephants, the biggest captive herd of Black rhino in the world, tigers, lions, rare monkeys and cats. Port Lympne contains the "Palace of the Apes", the biggest family gorilla house in the world which will house over 25 gorillas in time. The Park also contains an historic mansion together with a formal garden. The mansion played host to many important members of pre-war society including Edward and Mrs.Simpson, Queen Mary, Winston Churchill and Mountbatten. Contents include mural rooms, the Rex Whistler Tent Room and a Moorish patio. Howletts is south east of Canterbury and is well signposted off the A2. Port Lympne is less than 10 minutes from junction 11 off the M20. Both Parks are open from 10am. |
